For over 20 years, it has been a burning ambition of Essex Young Farmers to own its very own headquarters.
Last year we finally succeeded in getting planning permission to convert a redundant farm building in Chatham Green into the permanent home that we have been longing for. The site is ideal, with its central location, in between Chelmsford and Braintree, and good road networking meaning easy and quick access for members across the county.
The proposed headquarters in Whitbreads Farm will not only house our office but will provide meeting rooms and storage facilities as well. The building will provide a base for all the members and improve the identity of the organisation, as well as helping us to attract new people. Equally as important, it will provide our 2 members of staff with a dramatically improved working environment.
Now that a site has been secured, we are busy with the all important fundraising. We have set ourselves a target of raising £350,000, which will allow us to finance the purchase of the building, the extensive renovations needed and the basic maintenance work required in the future. Since September 2006, we have been working very hard and have already raised over £80,000. This has been achieved through various means, including our own calendar of scantily clad members, a quiz night, an auction of promises, a monster party and the grain campaign, where farmers across the county donated wheat for us to collect and sell on. The amount of support we have had has been terrific so things are moving in the right direction.
